At a leisurely donkey’s pace, we begin with a visit to the village spring of Paderne, dating back to the 18th century. From there, we follow the wild, overgrown riverbed along the “Ribeira de Quarteira” to a historic water mill. These charming ruins are still used today as part of a traditional water-powered milling system.
A little further on, we visit the medieval bridge built on Roman foundations. Restored in 1771, it has been preserved for modern use.
Next, we gently ascend to the historic “Castelo Paderne” — one of the seven castles depicted on the Portuguese flag. This impressive Moorish fortress is a recognized cultural heritage site of Portugal. The stunning coastal view that unfolds before us invites a shared picnic.
On the way back to the donkey farm, we pass through picturesque orange and olive groves, enjoying the beautiful landscape.
